Have you ever taken a photo with someone you’ve never met, yet it feels like you know them? I'm sure that sounds odd, but it actually happened to me. Here’s the story.
After attending a John Maxwell Certification Program in Orlando Florida in February, 2014, I posted a photo on Facebook of Scott Fay and me. Scott is the author of “Discover Your Sweet Spot: The 7 Steps to Create a Life of Success and Significance” and is the Executive VP of the John Maxwell Team. That’s Scott and me in the photo below. Actually, it’s a photobomb. I wrote a humorous post about me introducing myself to him. The problem with the introduction was, as you can see in the photo, his back was turned to me because he didn’t even know I was behind him. Scott was engaged in a conversation with someone else. To make a long story short, he happened to be in the lobby when I was passing through. Of course, he had no idea that someone, namely me, was standing behind him posing for a photo. That’s what made it so much fun.
While he was engrossed in conversation, I asked a passerby to snap the photo. Since I wanted a photo and didn’t know if I’d get the opportunity again, I resorted to the most resourceful means available at the time. When I posted the photo and narrative on Facebook, it caught sail and over 40 people liked the post and/or commented, including Scott Fay himself.
As a result, Scott offered me a signed copy of his new book. I received the autographed copy in the mail the next week. It was awesome! I couldn’t believe it. He actually sent me the book just as he said. In my next post, I thanked him and said I would blog about the experience when I launched my new website. Well, it didn’t stop there. This time I included a photo of me holding the book and wearing a t-shirt with the photo of us on it. I had the photo placed on the t-shirt myself... Just thought it would be amusing.
Scott M. Fay, author of Discover Your Sweet Spot: The 7 Steps to Create a Life of Success and Significance. The day we didn't actually meet.
He kept his word. And I kept mine. The book is a fantastic read, and something I will always cherish.
Someday I’ll get to meet Scott Fay. When I do, I’m sure I’ll blog about it.
My take-away from the experience is: “It is more beneficial to follow the 'inner tug' than it is to ignore it and never discover the gift that awaits you.” When I saw the book in my hand, it was an inspiration and another affirmation that I would write my own book and have it in my hand someday soon. It represented another divine setupalong my journey.
Have you ever felt the tug or felt compelled to do something and didn’t know why? Did you do it?
