Is something holding you back from writing your first book? I've heard this question asked many times and in various situations. However, short of being held at gunpoint, it would be quite an undertaking for someone to keep you back -- unless the perpetrator is you.
It doesn't take long to realize that the only wall between me and my goals is inside my head. It's our mindset. I have little battles in my mind all the time. But, they're usually short and swift. Here's how it works. Some mornings I wake up inspired with several new ideas. But if my goal is to write a book, I must decide how these new ideas fit with my current goal or other activities. Otherwise, I may not accomplish the goal I already have. Each may be tempting, but only one can win my time. Does this ever happen to you? If so, take a pause and ask yourself these four things:
- Is it a need?
- Is it a want?
- Is it a distraction?
- Is it an emergency?
The only two here that matter is 1 and 4. If number four doesn't consume 24/7 of your time, you don't have anything preventing you. In the future, whenever you feel like something is holding you back, reassess your situation using the four points above.
Again I ask, "What's holding you back?"
